Buffavento (Cyprus) in a time lapse and pictures

Hi.

We all know it. We find something interesting in the internet (or wherever). Something which touches us personally.
A friend of mine found a time-lapse video some time ago. Someone made a time lapse video of a time range of 24 hours. So, the camera was shooting 24 hours the same scene. In general was it a bit boring… but the idea was interesting.

buffavento_14If you are not familiar with time lapse videos. That are movies where it looks like the world is turning faster. :) Like that it’s possible to squeeze 5 hours into 5 minutes.
For what it’s good? For things which happen slowly, for example. Like clouds moving on the sky. Or stars in the night. Or even the live on the street can look very interesting like that.

We decided to try it by our own. It works actually very simple. You take your camera, you put it on a tripod and you make sure that both is not moving at all. The camera should have an interval setting. Set the interval up and lean back. The camera makes now ever x-second a picture. As long as you like.
But a few things you should have anyway in mind:

  • Keep an eye on the battery, because the session can take several hours. So you should take care that the camera is not running out of power and switches off.
Have enough spare batteries and maybe even a charger with you.
  • Btw battery. Switch off everything you don’t need at the camera, to save power. Focus and then switch to manual focusing (nothing will change at the focus point usually… so, focus at the beginning and thats it). Switch off the display, its not needed. The camera will also not need the image stabilizer, it’s on the tripod and you made sure that it will not move ;)
  • My Nikon D5200 have an interval timer which is shooting maximum 999 pictures. For a proper time lapse you’ll maybe shoot several thousand pictures. So, take care that the camera doesn’t stop shooting. Start the interval new from time to time… latest immediately after the camera took this 999 pictures.
  • Does the weather is changing? Nothing is worse then a wet camera or its gone with the wind… and maybe even destroyed.
  • Remember to have enough space to save all the pictures (several thousand). Big memory cards. Several are good, in case the 1st, 2nd, 3rd,… is full.

So we were thinking how to do it best possible, to get a good result. I didn’t wanted to do it often. As I said, the camera have to make thousands of pictures. And that is not the best for the shutter mechanism, which works at the DSLR still mechanically. Ok, you could say now ‚Ahh, that few pictures… that is not a big deal for the shutter.‘. But lets say this part of the camera survives around 150.000 shots and we make during this day 15.000 pictures… then is 1/10 of its life time gone… in one day.
That much? Yes. The day have 86400 seconds. Lets say we make every 5 seconds a picture… then the camera will shot in 24 hours 17.280 pictures. So, better to think before when and where to do it. That every shot counts.

The single pictures will be later merged by a software on the computer. And then you’ll have a time frame movie. :)

buffavento_10And which place could be better as the abandoned castle Buffavento. The view from the second highest mountain in the Pentadakylos mountains. The plan was made and the preparing was next. 24 hour time lapse at the castle. That was the plan.
Which means we have to take everything with us. Food, drinks, sleeping bag, camera equipment (Nikon D5200 and GoPro Hero 2) with tripod(s), solar system to charge the batteries and so on. We had to plan it carefully, because the climbing up to the castle takes around 40 min and it’s not half bad.
If we would forget something in the car (or even at home)… it would be annoying ;)

The day came closer. We got even company from 3 Couchrsurfer. They liked the idea of the trip and had straight the chance to get a great adventure which they will not forget that quick. :)

Unfortunately there are things which nobody can affect. The weather, for example. It was foiling our plan of the 24 hours time lapse. It was middle of February and we reckoned with bad weather… but were hoping the best. But we were unlucky. We were only able to make some shorter shoots and some normal pictures. But the footage we got was also great. How the clouds move over the mountaintop is also great (till it started raining). But that was not the original plan.

So, we decided to go again, 2 weeks later. For a 2nd try. But it was the same. Rain in between. Now we wait until the summer… which is almost there.

But anyway… here the footage we could make during these days (the video is just from the first time… still have to process the second time). But it’s already very impressive to see that. (Pictures are below)

Visit at Lefkara

Hi together.

Today I was with a friend on picture tour. We went to the small mountain village Lefkara. It’s approx. 40 km from Limassol. With the car is it approx. 30 min to go.

The village is really special. Many people told me already about it… how nice it is, that artist live there and all the embroideries. Today it was time to go there.

Lefkara is located between Larnaca and Limassol. Almost exactly in the middle is a highway exit with McDonalds. This exit you have to take (but it is also signposted) and then in direction to the mountains. The second village is already Lefkara. You can’t miss it.

The village itself is separated in an upper and lower part. It’s around 500 meter above sea level and around 110 people live here.

It is famous for its embroidery and silversmiths. A legend says that even Leonardo da Vinci came 1481 to Lefkara to purchase lace cloth for the altar of the Duomo di Milano.

For sure is that this village is a special place on the island. I can’t really describe it, you need to see and feel it by yourself.

The village consists almost only of natural stone houses. The streets are very narrow (also for cars) and in many of them are flowerpots. The people are very friendly, which is maybe referable to the point that they want to sell their embroidery.

In some corners you can see some woman sitting together and they embroider together, on the street.

One alley was very interesting. It was approx. 1.20 meter wide. In the middle was a kind of bridge – which connect one house with the one opposite – above it. Under this bridge was a couch and a chair and even a painting was on the wall. I was afraid to walk through someones living room. But it was the alley. Really cool :)

After walking a while through this narrow alleys in this village, you realize one thing: Time carries no weight here.

Unfortunately are there also some abandoned houses (of Turkish Cypriots, which left them already before the war). They ruinous slowly but steady, which destroys the total picture a bit.

But anyway I would suggest a visit in the village Lefkara. It worth it for sure.

Also you can make beautiful pictures here ;)

I can’t say much more at the moment about Lefkara. Go there an have a look by yourself.

I will add some pictures below. Unfortunately I didn’t made much of the landscape and of the village itself, because I am at the moment more into macro photography :)

Best wishes

Gordon

9 earthquakes on one day yesterday in Cyprus

There was yesterday already messages about earthquakes in Facebook. First it was 3 and at the end of the day the number raised to 9.

I thought it is a joke and that someone mistaken a truck with an earthquake. Can happen :)
I didn’t felt anything the whole day. That’s why I couldn’t believe it.

But today there was even a link to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre. There they report about all earthquakes which happen. It is really interesting to see what is happening in our region. It’s all the time something shaking :o (See also the picture above)

There was 36 earthquakes till noon in Greece only, if I am not mistaken. The strongest one was 5,3 on the Richter scale.
Our was yesterday between 2.3 and 3.0.

I hope that are not a herald for something :) No, don’t worry. Everything is fine.. I hope :)

After the explosion now as well a radioactive disaster?

As I just read in the Famagusta Gazette, shall be also ammunition with uranium in the container. Or more specific, 125mm ammunition for APFSDS. Which exploded 2 days ago at the big bang.

The US embassy was sending a message to all Americans in Cyprus in which they informed them to avoid the area around Zigi and assigned not to pick up anything in this area.

The government itself prohibited the harvest and selling of fruits from an area of 3km around Zigi.

How serious the danger of a radioactive contamination really is can nobody really say. But if there is really a contamination… if a radius of 3km enough? I mean the explosion was huge and I guess a lot of dust was soar into the air and with it the radioactivity.

Last night also died the 19 years old Anthony Charalambous, which got insured at the explosion. The number of the death toll increased to 13.

Catastrophe in Cyprus – Huge explosion on military base

I was today in the morning without internet and called Kai to hear if there is everything working. He said „Joar, internet is working. But did you hear that with the power plant already? We had a total power cut because the main power plant got blown up!“… :-o „What?“

So, after the internet was back, I was looking on all news pages for information about it. So, the power plant itself doesn’t explode by itself. But seems like 2 container with ammunition on the military base next to it (close to Zigi/Mari).

Krankenwagen und Feuerwehr vor der Militärbasis

According to the newspaper the container caught fire and blow up. The shock wave was so huge that debris hit and destroyed windows from cars on the near by highway (Limassol – Larnaca) and insured even the driver.
Also the villages around got bombed by debris (splinter, metal sticks and whole roof parts) and houses got partly heavily damaged. And also the near by main power plant of the island got damaged and it imminent a shut down of the whole plant.

Eyewitnesses say it looks like after a bomb attack.

At least 12 people got killed in the disaster and at least 30 got insured.

The container itself remain from an confiscation, under pressure from US, in 2009, when they found an illegal ammunition transport from Syria to Iran. Since then the 98 container with ammunition are stored on the military base. And 2 blow up now last night. Not to think about what would have happened if all – or at least more – would have been exploded.

Update:
As we can read now at http://www2.onthisisland.com/cyprus-power-outage/2011/07/11/, are all 98 container exploded. The damage on the power plant is enormous (there is also a link to pictures from BBC… looks really bad).
The flags are on half mast and an terrorist attack is not excluded at the moment.
The link above is a live ticker. All new information will be published there.

I didn’t really heard anything here in Limassol. Actually I just fall a sleep a bit before. But it was the whole night strange foggy. Maybe a forerunner.

Cyprus is NOT Greece!

Because it always happen to me that people ask me „And, how is it in Greece?“ … or „Did you come good back to Greece?“ or „Tell me, you have the big finance crisis there in Greece?“ … Today again for all ignoramus. :P
Cyprus is not Greece! (South)Cyprus is an own country and has only that much to do Greece as the most locals here come of Greeks and because of that called Greek Cypriots.
And I live in Cyprus, not in Greece!
And again we have learned something ;-)

Nobody has a finance crises here (except me), Greece is (more or less) far away. Greek politics have nothing to say here and the country is called Cyprus.

In the north of Cyprus it becomes a bit more complicated. I can’t tell is exactly. According to Wikipedia belongs the territory of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus to the European Union. I need to ask Moni how it exactly is. But I think also North Cyprus have an own government and is with it an own country, but only Turkey accept it.

So: Greece is not Cyprus – Gordon is in Cyprus… everything clear? :-)

Typical Cyprus – Webhoster in Cyprus

Hi,

today something from the category ‚Typical Cyprus‘ ;-)

I was just looking around for web hosting in Cyprus. That is not so easy. Cyprus is not so big and the internet connections are bad as hell.

But I just found one. When I tried to figure out if the server is really located in Cyprus, I quickly rethought about hosting my web-space with them.
Here the original quote from the webpage of the provider (else no one will believe me):

Facilities

Simplex’s data centre is located on the 4th (top) floor of a building in the heart of Limassol, the international business centre of Cyprus and features 176m2 (approx. 1895 sq.ft.) of combined server space and office space.

Got it? :-)

Ok, everybody should know that computer produce heat. But heat is not so good for the hardware. For your computer at home is it not a big deal. But companies already should take care about a bit cooling. But in an datacenter is it a must have to take care about special cooling systems.
Good, there is no word about their cooling system. But for everybody who is not so familiar with with Cyprus. We gave here over 6 month with over 30 degrees. Partly over 40. And if I want to establish here a datacenter, then I’ll do it as deep in the ground as possible, and not in the top floor (4th floor) of an high building. Already in the 2nd floor of our building is the temperature difference enormous. In the basement is it nice. In my room in the second floor, top floor, is it not below 36 degrees at the moment (without A/C).

I am curious how many server they burn during one month and how high the electricity bill for the air condition is ;-)

That will be not my new web hosting provider!

Bus connection from Limassol to Nicosia / Cyprus

Hi,

You’ll find more information here: http://www.nicosiabuses.com.cy/cityroutes.html
This bus service offer also connections to other places of interest. Have a look if you find your destination. But the webpage is really old… there are still Cyprus pounds shown :-)

Car insurance and driving license in Cyprus

Hi,

I would like to set a quick notice about the subject car insurance and driving license in Cyprus.

As the day came closer that my little car will belong finally to me, I had also to think about how to insure it. Of course we have lots of insurance companies here. An so I was asking a few people how, where, who and how expensive.

I’ve heard from many people that I need a Cyprus driving license when I want to have a car insurance in Cyprus. They look here like the old German driving licenses… a piece of paper. I didn’t felt well when I’ve heard that… I don’t want to give away my nice plastic driving license. But that was the supposed to be procedure. To give up my German driving license and get a Cyprus one.

BUT… today I went to an insurance company and nobody said anything about it. They accepted my German one without any comment. Ok, I have to mention that I have already the EU driving license. I think that could be the reason. Well, the plastic card driving license which looks like a credit card (in the size).

So, don’t listen always what other people say (I should break this habit generally) and first wait and see. ;-)

Greetings
Gordon

Self-made Frapé

Hi,

our favorite drink in the last days is a typical Greek drink… „Frapé“. Frapè is a great refreshing drink and gives energy to body and sould :D

How to do it? Simple… take a glass… the best is one which becomes wider on top (like a goblet). Then add one teaspoon instant coffee and 2-3 teaspoons sugar on top. Then add approx. 4cl (Ice cold) water. Then use a Frapè mixer (don’t know if a normal milk frother also work) and mix it very well. It will start to foam very well… and it has to be! I mix it until no more foam appears. But it can backfire with other types of glasses. So, mix it maximum until the glass is to 3/4 full with foam. Then drop 3 ice cubes in the glass and fill it up with milk.
Add a straw, quick stir and ready is a yummy Frapè ;)

I hope you like and enjoy it.

Regards
Gordon
